10/10

Updated: Oct 6

July 2025 is our tenth birthday! As a perfect moment of serendipity, we’ve also just signed a 10 year lease for our Northumberland Street site. Our summer open house weekend, on July 17th, 18th and 19th, was an opportunity to celebrate the past and look to the future. We also launched our new crowdfunding campaign called “Building Good Things’ new community hub”, as part of Lancaster City Council’s crowdfunding scheme. If we raise the money, this will help us to build a new creative community hub and café for Morecambe, making all our dreams come true...

The weekend kicked off on Friday evening, with an exhibition opening for “Wonders Will Never Cease”, produced by Jules Abraham. 81 artists each produced a mini work on canvas (measuring just 9 x 7cm) which were displayed in our atrium. There was an incredible range of subjects, processes and approaches. There were some incredibly detailed paintings, but artists also did imaginative things like grow a 3D beanstalk, let their cats make the painting, and put a canvas in the microwave. All the canvases were for sale to support our crowdfunder at £15 each, or £20 to include a poster representing every work. We raised a huge £825 so far with 47 sold, which means there are some canvases still up for grabs. Keep an eye out on our socials, or get in touch if you’re interested in purchasing an original artwork by a talented artist!

On Saturday and Sunday, we opened our doors to a huge range of activities. There was something for everyone. People were welcomed into the event with a performance of a new and original play in our outdoor space. “Magnum Bonum,” was written by Alison Fisher, and featured performances from our collective members (and their children!). The title has two meanings: 1) a variety of plum and 2) a great and good thing. The play took inspiration from Morecambe’s history and our new building, exploring class divisions revolving around a particular crop of plums. Sets and costumes were a collective effort, including salt dough pears and plums which were carefully sculpted and painted. The performance was a feast for the senses, and there were moments for the audience to sample food and drink, helping Morecambe’s history to come alive.

Activities bringing our building to life were:

  • Revamped Racoon’s “Otherworldly Creatures” workshop, inviting people to come and conjure creatures from their imaginations using craft supplies;

  • Postcard designing for our “From Morecambe with Love” project, led by Charlotte Done and Morecambe Risopress;

  • Screenprinting in partnership with Lancaster City Council to launch the new Bay Rose crossing, which was designed by our own Beki Melrose in collaboration with collective members and the Peoples' Jury.

  • Scrapbooking with Becca Snow, sharing memories of our first ten years from our creative community;

  • Watercolour portraits with new collective member Hannah Robinson, who captured people’s characters in a swift ten minute sitting;

  • Live music from local musicians, who serenaded us all day with beautiful acoustic sets, programmed by Jennie Slater-White.

Maybe most excitingly, we trialled our new café counter, run by Charlotte Done and built by Jo Melbah. Charlotte served hot drinks, sandwiches and a delicious selection of cakes. We hope this was the first of many times, as we work towards making our community café more of a permanent fixture in our building.

Saturday evening was a literary feast: “Get Your Words Out” was hosted by the Nib Crib’s Jim Lupton, offering a platform for budding writers to get up in front of a supportive audience. We heard from first-timers and experienced pros, who read poetry, prose, essays and even exhibition proposals and recipe books. Beki took a turn in the kitchen, serving a mouth-watering Thai green curry. It was a fantastic night out! “Get Your Words Out” returns as part of our October open house weekend, where we’ll be sharing seasonably spooky ghost stories…

This celebration was a perfect opportunity to look towards our next ten years, now that we’ve signed a lease to transform this building into our permanent home. Our crowdfunder will help us to make this dream a reality: we’re raising money to make our building accessible to everyone, and to redecorate our atrium space. Our new community hub will be a space for workshops, performances and other events where local creatives can meet, share and collaborate, championing creative talent in Morecambe. We hope it will break down barriers surrounding access to art by inviting people into our building with a new café and garden space. If this sounds important to you too, you can donate to our crowdfunder until the end of September! We’d really appreciate your help building a new creative community hub.
